Classic Film: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari @ IFI from August 29th

The IFI have announced the release of the definitive 2014 restoration of the first true horror film, the 1920 silent masterpiece that is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari).  The film opens on 29th August at the IFI and in selected regional cinemas in Ireland.

One of the most iconic masterpieces in cinema history, Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari shook filmgoers worldwide and changed the direction of the art form. Now presented in a definitive restoration, the film’s chilling, radically expressionist vision is set to grip viewers again.

At a local carnival in a small German town, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding…

Incalculably influential, the film’s nightmarishly jagged sets, sinister atmospheric and psychological emphasis left an immediate impact in its wake (horror, film noir, and gothic cinema would all be shaped directly by it). But this diabolical tale nevertheless stands alone – now more mesmerising than ever.

The theatrical release will be followed by a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition as part of Eureka’s award-winning the Masters of Cinema Series on 29 September 2014 which will be available at the IFI Film Shop, Dublin’s specialist film shop.

Tickets and times will be available for the
