The 29th Galway Film Fleadh will host the return of Spotlight on Actors, a unique casting workshop unlike any other. The workshop, which takes place on Saturday, July 15th, will be held in association with Hubbard Casting and Spotlight
Spotlight, the home of casting in Ireland, is bringing their studio to Galway to create a casting village at the Fleadh, helping actors from all over Ireland experience the professional studio set up for themselves. Actors will be invited to provide a self-tape of their audition via Form Plus (details will be provided), or to have their audition filmed at Spotlight’s Studio at Bow Street, Dublin (early booking is advised). During the Hubbard’s casting workshop on the 15th of July, the actors will see how casting directors use Spotlight to cast their projects, when the Hubbards spot-pick, review and critique the actors’ performance footage. This will offer an original and exciting chance for actors to prepare and record their scenes, experience how it will be viewed professionally, whilst also offering attending actors, directors, writers and film makers the opportunity to mingle and be introduced to the casting element of film projects within the ‘pop-up’ environment. Spotlight is used by casting directors around the world every day to cast their projects, offering professional performers access to roles in theatre, film and television. As a performer, joining Spotlight is the best way to get noticed by casting professionals throughout Ireland, Europe and America. Spotlight gives Irish performers the opportunity to apply for roles that are cast locally and internationally and at the Spotlight studio in Dublin, actors are able to film their auditions using state of the art equipment, giving them global exposure and a professional edge. A range of recent projects that have been cast using Spotlight are Game of Thrones, Playground a 10 Part Web Series aimed at young audience and young actors, The Boring Diary of Frances Moon a short film produced by Zanzibar Films, Hangmen, a play by Martin McDonagh produced by the Royal Court, Artemis Fowl by Lucy Beavan for Walt Disney, Resistance and Rebellion for RTE, Striking Out by Hughes for RTE, and The Professor and the Madman by Dan Hubbard Casting.
Casting director Ros Hubbard, together with her husband John, founded Hubbard Casting in 1976 and the company operates from headquarters in both London and Dublin. In a career that has spanned over 30 years, the Hubbards’ most notable discoveries have included Orlando Bloom, who they cast in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Kate Winslet and Colin Farrell, and Aidan Turner and James Nesbitt (both cast in The Hobbit). Ros has won many awards for her contribution to film, the most recent being when she and John were honoured for their work on The Commitments at the Oscar Wilde Awards in Los Angeles. In an effort to assist films getting made the Hubbards have recently turned to producing projects, but they both love and will continue to cast as many films as possible. The Hubbards return every year to inform and educate actors to the professional demands of the industry, updating actors on the ever changing industry trends and standards for actors, covering headshots, CVs, audition techniques, self-taping, securing a professional agent, industry etiquette on approaching casting directors and everything else involved with actors getting employed.
Please Note: Places on the casting workshop are limited – all successful applicants MUST bring an updated CV and headshot with them on the day, and have a one-minute long monologue prepared and ready to perform live (no longer than 1 minute). Applicants will be required to provide a self-tape of their monologue by Tuesday 11th July, or to have had their audition filmed at Spotlight’s headquarters in Dublin on 4th, 5th, 6th or 10th July (early booking is advised). Please note there is an age restriction on this workshop – applicants must be at least 16 years of age and as old as they like! The masterclass costs €50 and the workshop takes place on Saturday the 15th of July from 2pm – 5pm in the Radisson Hotel, Galway.
